Pine Wood Race Words and music by Joe Ficklin © 2025-02-26G C D G It must have been, well, I don't know / More than a dozen years ago G C D G My kid came home from scouts one night / With a block of wood both small and light C D C D And set it down on the kitchen table / With four black wheels and I was able G C D G To take a look at the written guide / And felt the thrill of fatherly pride C D We were going to the Pine Wood Race G C Where we were sure to win first place C D The best design to take the prize C D G And a trophy bright before jealous eyes G C D G A block of wood to take and shape / With hopes of gravity escape G C D G Reduce the drag and grease the wheels / Bend the rules until they squeal C D C D Carve from the wood a special car / To take the track both fast and far G C D G The goal, of course, to win the race / Don't even think of second place G C D G I found the best of plans to get / And download from the internet G C D G A wood mill using CNC / I got to use for a small fee C D C D And turned the block with subtle grace / Suitable to win first place G C D G With sanded wheels and carbon dust / To satisfy even NASCAR's lust REFRAIN G C D G Some glossy paint, airbrushed and clean / Metallic cherry jelly bean G C D G A little weight hid in the nose / Helps it when the racing goes C D C D Wind tunnel testing show the wins / In just a day the race begins G C D G Then bundled up like fighter ace / My kid and I went to the race G C D G How many people in the crowd? / I do not know, but it was loud G C D G As families all came out to see / The winner of this race would be C D C D Checked in and waiting for the start / I saw the other cars apart G C D G What is the meaning of this game? / All our cars looked just the same REFRAIN G C D G When all the other fathers there / Saw my car they'd frown and glare G C D G And then I knew it had to be / All the other men like me C D C D Had copied all the best laid plans / Used CNC and carbon sands G C D G Except for one, a rough hewn sled / One made by the kid instead G C D G The judges came to take a look / Then studied pages in their book G C D G And with a ruling all could hear / A violation did appear C D C D Within the rules and towards the end / It said no adults could pretend G C D G Our cars were useless, all but dead / The winner was the blocky sled! C D We all went to the Pine Wood Race G C We thought we'd get to win first place C D The best design won't be the one C D G Where winning is just based on fun!
