Prometheus received his due / Upon the mountain rock he waits As everyday an eagle flew / To punish those who fight their fates So Zeus in anger at the prize / Given to man from titan's hands Decreed another gift devised / To bring torment upon the land Hephaestus from within the earth / The god of artistry did plan A perfect woman, she whose birth / Would bring about the fall of man For fire give by the one / Would lift men up to godly fame So punishment would now be done / Pandora raised to change the game And all the gods did give her gifts / To rival heaven's brightest star Beauty, wit, and longing cruel / And plagues hid up within a jar "Accept no gifts from Zeus" said he / Whose liver each day eagles fed But Epimetheus could only see / The beauty that he vowed to wed As hindsight was the skill he bore / Each choice he made was for the worse Pandora stood outside his door / He could not see the awful curse REFRAIN Oh, evil mind in beauty bound / As hard to grasp as grains of sand She tipped the jar unto the ground / And plagues swept out upon the land The evils Zeus had gathered in / To counter fire's burning flame And bury under weight of sin / The calling of Pandora's name REFRAIN In vain we tried to stem the flow / The flame would only burn so bright So ever evil tends to grow / And darkness spreads in fading light But even if the gods are far / We still have strength that we can find With all the plagues spilled from the jar / A blessing, hope, was left behind REFRAIN
