Near Earth

Near Earth‑‑too damn near-- Somewhere in the cold and silent blue And travelling blind. Don't get too comfy here Nobody's gonna tell you what to do When our tangled threads unwind. Oh yes we're watching, but our vision's far from clear. It could happen in a century's time, it could happen next year‑‑ And where will you be when fate comes calling? What will you do, when the sky is falling? Who will be left to tend the pyre As we fall headlong into aeons of ice and fire? As we fall headlong into aeons of ice and fire? Poor dear Mother Earth, It's happened before and she carries the scars, As does the cratered Moon. What price? What's it worth? We could arm ourselves against the stars But we'd better start work soon. We're far from helpless if we put our minds to this. Choose now or it's into the dark with a cosmic goodnight kiss-- And where will you be when fate comes calling? What will you do, when the sky is falling? Who will be left to tend the pyre As we fall headlong into aeons of ice and fire? As we fall headlong into aeons of ice and fire? And how will you eat without the seasons' turning? And how will you breathe when the very air is burning? For the truth is this, we must shield the cradle; This is no lie, no science fiction fable. Near Earth‑‑too damn near-- Somewhere in the cold and silent Blue. . . .
