At LTUE 2023 (I think it was, maybe 2022) as we were leaving filking one night I had a conversation with a gentleman about racism. I expressed that I was familiar with having racist attitudes applied to me, which he not only rejected as possible, but further accused me of perpetuating racism because my skin is white. Although I cannot say I've experienced the same scope or scale of situation as that man (and quantity has a quality all its own), I have had some life experiences where I was a minority and others around were prejudiced against me - quite independent of other sources of prejudice with which I am also familiar. I've been meaning to write a musical rebuttal for some years, and Zion's song provided a fun framework (Villanelle) to try to fit it into. Just took a year to finish writing from there...
