The Elevator, Man Words and music by Joe FicklinCHORUS D G He was so low, but soon he’ll be high D A High enough to touch the tippy top Crowne of the sky D G Though it won’t last long—he’s coming down later A D Y’know he’s got a thing for riding on the elevator G D He’s made it to the con, where there’s so much going on G D With panels, workshops, hucksters, masquerade G D But you know he won’t go far from riding in that car A D You can find him waiting out on the out on the promenade CHORUS Back when he was younger, he used to take the stairs The Doctor said it was better for his heart But since his heart was broken when his girl friend later dumped him* The elevator gave him a brand new gave him a brand new start (*She “dumped” him over the side of the third story balcony, which she claims was completely accidental and her hands pushing against his shoulder blades was in actuality, a disparate attempt to keep him from falling. Fortunately, one of those ubiquitous hotel bushes with thorns broke his fall and while he didn’t literally “break his heart” he did break his leg in three places, and the berry juice from the shrub stained his favorite t-shirt. Now with his leg in a cast, he couldn’t take the stairs anymore. And so…) CHORUS Register on level two, check it out, not much to do But a party’s on the fourth floor and on ten This fourteen story hotel is tall and you can bet he’ll visit all And when he hits the top then he will start on down on down again CHORUS On the second day on the second floor, in stepped a girl he hadn’t seen before She pushed the buttons five, six, seven, eight nine At every floor his spirit rose as those doors would open then would close She said “I like to ride the car, I hope that you don’t you don’t mind” CHORUS He thought that she could be “the one” for riding with her was lots of fun He asked her name, she held up her hand and said “Later” He felt a sinking feeling then, but it was only the car going down to ten Then she signed and he knew that he had found love, love in the elevator CHORUS (last line) Y’know he’s got a thing for that girl in the elevator (slowly) And now they’re… D G On top of the world, looking down on creation (spoken) She knows how to push his buttons (spoken) He’s hopin’ she doesn’t give him the shaft (spoken) There’s more to their relationship… but that’s another story
