G C G D The warning came quickly, without hesitation / To scientists manning the floor G C G D G The sun had erupted, an act of cremation / Like no other eruption before G C G D Light hit us first but not quickly apparent / An increase in brightness and hue G C G D G But riding the wave of reaction aberrant / The plasma behind it was due G C G D Mister Carrington, please call your office / Or, at least, send a wire G C G D G The sun has expelled a mass wave of plasma / And it seems that the sky is on fire C D C D Auroras are bending in sheets red and green / And stretching from Earth to the sky G C G D G Electronics are frying all over the planet / And billions of people could die Two hundred years ago Carrington charted / Spots that appeared on the sun Trying to figure where the patterns started / Plotting the course of their run On September first of Eighteen Five Nine / With Carrington watching it all The flash from the sun was in no ways benign / In a day on the Earth it would fall REFRAIN The storm that was triggered was not of this Earth / Auroras bathed all in their light From pole to equator sky show gave birth / To rumors of unending night The copper in telegraph lines were soon sparking / No batteries needed to run The scientists journals were full of remarking / Of plasma spit out by the sun REFRAIN What Carrington charted that day long ago / The monster returning from space But this flare is larger, as magnitudes show / And nothing is safe in this place All our computers, our phones, and our cars / The lives our technologies shape Will all crash and burn 'cause a burp from our star / Is too big now for us to escape REFRAIN
