Filk

The general ethos of filk is of inclusivity, and of breaking down the barriers between performer and audience. Participatory, like folk music. Filk is largely defined in terms of the community - the things filkers sing. - Roughly summarized and paraphrased from Nathan Langford's spiel at LTUE 2021 Sat.

For online filk singing, The Festival of the Living Rooms.

About this subsite

I am gradually developing a filk lyric wiki. The original impetus was when LTUE took away their projector on the last day, and I decided to stick lyrics up on my personal site so those w/phones could still sing along. Songs should only be added when used/intended for immediate use at a filksing, so the use is fair. Email me for a user account, which allows editing - logging in is as simple as opening a link from your email on the device to log in from, and lasts 400 days since the last visit. Sadly, anonymous edits entail too high a load on moderators due to automated spam bots. I intend for all content URLs (.txt, .html) to be stable indefinitely, as well as the structure of most subsite elements (notably not search presently). If I replace this subsite with a domain, I will ensure redirects are correct, and if I change site structure I will honor old URLs with redirects as well. If you are interested and experienced with setting up non-profit governance such that URLs can remain even after I pass, let me know (though I'm still under 40 in 2024, so no rush).

If you are a writer of filk songs, please feel free to upload as many of yours as you care to. If you would like some kind of personal homepage for filk and lyrics, please contact me and I'd love to understand your needs; lyrics are small and light, and should be easy to host. I'm not particularly interested in getting paid, but I do care a lot about stable URLs. For audio I recommend Bandcamp and YouTube.

Features:

I've an alpha quality viewport splitter extension which may help performers when songs are not fully chorded.
